The end result was a fresh line of guns which changed many of the more mature products in 1963–1964. The quick response from the shooting press and general public was overwhelmingly unfavorable: the popular verdict was that Winchester experienced sacrificed quality on the “cheapness experts,” and Winchester was no longer looked upon as a Status brand, triggering a marked lack of market share. To this day, gun collectors take into account “post-64” Winchesters to get both of those much less appealing and fewer precious than their predecessors.

Depending on what I have observed and read in other sources, the oval (P) proof mark was not introduced till 1908. Before that time, Winchester marked “OF” (outdoors fitted) on the bottom of the barrel under the forend inventory for that mail buy barrels. I've see many of them on Model 1885 One Shot Rifles that predate 1908.

Several of those are still in production currently via companies for example Browning, Rossi, Navy Arms and others that have revived numerous of the discontinued models or developed reproductions.
